In the last few years, there has been a 20% increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes among people aged 14 to 25. Dr. BM Makkar, a senior diabetologist and head of research at the Society for the Study of Diabetes in India, stated that it is very difficult to define a set age for the onset of type II diabetes in the present situation.

Dr. Nikhil Tandon, head of the department of endocrinology, metabolism, and diabetes at AIIMS, stated that nearly 40% of diabetics under the age of 25 suffer from the type II variant, as per the data in the Registry of Youth Onset Diabetes in India. He added that type 2 diabetes had the same repercussions among children and adults.

Dr. Subhash Wangnoo, the senior endocrinologist at Apollo Hospitals, stated that some of the key factors behind the increasing incidence among children are physical inactivity, first-degree relative diabetes, severe obesity, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.
